In this playful performance, Grace Ndiritu uses meditation, letter writing and word-play to unpack what a Women’s Strike for decolonial and feminist thought means in the 21st century, to African and European women in the Belgian. Local women’s groups from the African diaspora in Brussels, as well as you, are invited to activate a textile installation. The woven carpet incorporates an iconic image from the Women’s Strike movement, which the Italian feminist Silvia Federica co-founded in the 1970s and was commissioned by both Bozar and Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris in the context of the The Power of my Hands: African Women Artists exhibition which took place last year. And now in 2022 during the Afropolitan Festival, it will again be the stage for Ndiritu’s performance upon which (African and European) women will gather and empower each other through Federica’s texts.
Grace Ndiritu is a British-Kenyan artist whose artworks are concerned with the transformation of our contemporary world. The performance at Bozar is part of her long term body of work Healing The Museum which comes out of a need to re-activate the ‘dying’ art space as a space for sharing, participation and ethics.
