Mikael GUSTAFSSON: nieuwe voorzitter van EP. FEMM

62. Mikael GUSTAFSSON: nieuwe voorzitter van EP. FEMM

"It is with great pleasure that I start working as Chair of the FEMM committee. I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to all my colleagues for the opportunity to lead the FEMM committee. I am very much looking for-ward to working with you.

I would like to say a few words about my ambitions for our future work. I would like to continue the work of my predecessor, Ms Svensson, by strengthening the profile of the committee, both internally in relation to other parts of the European Parliament, and externally.

The gender mainstreaming work in the Parliament through the increased cooperation with MEPs responsible for gender in other committees, which is already a sucess, should be embraced.

I would also like to emphasize the importance of working and associating with all relevant stakeholders such as responsible UN bodies, the Council of Europe, Community and Member State institutions, the social partners and NGOs that work for women’s rights and gender equality.

Finally, I would like to add that gender equality is not the sole responsibility of women. We can only achieve gender equality with the full cooperation and participation of men and boys. As chair of this Committee, I hope that my position can contribute to sending this clear and strong message to all those concerned both within and outside the Parliament.

Mikael Gustafsson"
