As Angela Davis wrote, “You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.”
With Liminal, Kevin Fay invites you to a workshop where we will envision sociopolitical transformation. in the workshop, we will acknowledge the oppressive violence of Europatriarchal heterocolonial realities, and we’ll talk about what masculinity has to do with it.
To frame this, we’ll read manifestos from Love & Lightning: A Collection of Queer and Feminist Manifestos. we made a selection of the following texts, though we’ll only read a few : The Combahee River Collective Statement, The Personal is Political, Sexual Relations and the Class Struggle, Xenofeminism, Countersexual Manifesto, Radicalqueens Manifesto #2, Hydrofeminism and Radical Tenderness Is…A Living Manifesto.
Together, we’ll explore the manifestos that speak to us, and we’ll use Kevin’s ongoing ‘conversing with masculinity’ research project to guide both written and spoken exchanges.
After sharing embodiment practices to increase sensorial awareness, we’ll address the texts in an order that interests us, and we’ll use scores to ask questions, encourage conversation, discuss associations, and understand what we need as we read. concretely, this means we’ll work in cycles that serve us – going from the body to the book, from the book to each other, and from each other to creative expression – visiting spaces in between along the way.
Practicalities
– The workshop will take place in English, but translations between English and French will be possible.
– There’s no required reading. paper, writing utensils (e.g. pencils, pens, colored pencils, markers) and copies of the texts will be provided.
– If you’re a newcomer to queer or feminist literature, or you’re a dedicated, passionate reader, or you’re somewhere in between, you are welcome in this workshop!
